MCWILLIAMS, WILLIAM HOWARD, Corporal, # 17020385, USAAF

 

William H. McWilliams was born in 1922 in Kansas to Charles Collier McWilliams (1880-1942) and Jennie Belle (Umphenour) McWilliams (1881-1964) (married 29 September 1904, Crawford Co, KS). Siblings were M. Pearl (McWilliams) Meyer (1906-1991), Rhoda Mildred (McWilliams) Goshert (1910-1996), Lawrence N. McWilliams (1913-1914), Lula N. McWilliams (1913-1919), Charles Ora McWilliams (1916-1977).

 

He enlisted in the USAAF at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, on 12 December 1941. He was trained to maintain and operate the radio equipment on the C-87 Express Liberator. He earned his crewman wings. He was sent overseas to India. On 19 July 1943 a C-87 (B-24 cargo variant, Express Liberator), # 41-11907, assigned to 10th Air Force, 22nd Transport Group, 77th Transport Squadron, Jorhat, India, departed the airfield on a cargo mission through the Himalayan mountain range (the Hump). It crashed in Burma. Its last known position was at 97° 0’ East & 26° 50’ North at 6,000 feet altitude. An annotation says that parachutes were used. He is remembered on the tablets of the missing in the Manila American Cemetery & Memorial, Philippines.

 

His brother, Charles O. McWilliams, born 18 January 1916, served in the U.S. Army, Staff Sergeant, from 12 December 1941. He died 20 December 1977 and is buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Claremore, Rogers Co., Oklahoma.

Ernest E. Roush was born on 30 January 1919 in Cheshire, Gallia Co., Ohio, to Everett Martin Roush (1894-1974) and Amy Florence (Herrmann) Roush (1894-1989). Siblings were Louis Walter Roush (McElhaney) (1915-2003), George William Roush (1921-1944), Helen Margeret (Roush) Hall (1922-1996), and Fannie Ellen (Roush) Oylear (1925-2002).
