He enlisted in the USAAF at Maxwell Field, Montgomery Co., Alabama, on 26 January 1942. He completed flight instruction through advanced schools and was assigned to fly the Curtiss C-46 Commando. He was multi-engine rated and earned his commission and pilot wings. He was sent overseas to India. On 20 December 1943 a C-46A Commando, # 41-12406, assigned to 10th Air Force, Mohanbari, India, departed on a cargo mission through the Himalayan mountain range (the Hump) to Chengkeng, China. The C-46 crashed and has not been found. He is remembered on the tablets of the missing in the Manila American Cemetery & Memorial, Philippines.

 

His father, born 30 June 1897, served in the U.S. Army, Corporal, during WWI from 11 August 1916 to 10 August 1920. He died 22 April 1976 and is buried in the Chattanooga National Cemetery, Chattanooga, Tennessee. The above information is possibly erroneous.

After enlisting in the USAAF, he was trained to maintain and operate the radio equipment on the C-46 Commando. He earned his crewman wings. He was sent overseas to India. OSBORN, GEORGE CAMPBELL, JR., Private First Class, # 34396150, USAAF

 

George C. Osborn Jr. was born on 10 February 1921 to George Campbell Osborn (1893-1962) and Mary Rosa (Bull) Osborn (1894-1977) (married 5 May 1920, Franklin Co., AL). Siblings were Jack Osborn (1923-2000), Genell (Osborn) Henderson (1927-2013), Joe Osborn (1930-2000), and Iris Rose (Osborn) Murray (1936-    ).

 

He registered for the WWII draft on 14 February 1942, resided in rural Bear Creek, Marion Co., AL,  and described himself as 6’, 195 lbs, with brown hair and blue eyes. He enlisted in the USAAF at Fort McClellan, Alabama, on 22 October 1942.
