He enlisted in the U.S. Army on 2 October 1937 to 1 October 1940, 3 October to 30 September 1941, and began his last term of service 1 October 1941. He was trained as a paratrooper and in communications and assigned to the Signals Corps., detached to the O.S.S., Detachment 101 (India-Burma). On 4 March 1945, a C-47, # 41-18554, assigned to Air Transport Command, 3rd Combat Cargo Group, 11th Combat Cargo Squadron, departed the airfield at Dinjan, India, on a passenger ferry mission to Ledo, India. On attempting to land, it made a low turn and crashed. All aboard were killed. He was a passenger on board. His remains were recovered from the American military airfield cemetery at Kalaikunda, India, and buried in the Beverly National Cemetery, Beverly, Burlington Co., New Jersey, on 7 January 1949 (Sec. E, Grave 2101). He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal.

BLALOCK, FRANCIS WILLARD, Second Lieutenant, # 0-2066302, USAAF

 

Francis W. Blalock was born on 28 August 1924 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, to Arthur Leigh Blalock (1893-1957) and Montie (Wells) Blalock (1894-1967) (married 16 April 1916, Durham, NC). Siblings included Margaret Manning (Blalock) Morris (1917-1991), Marian W. (Blalock) Isley (1919-    ), and Ruth Carol (Blalock) Ethridge (1920-2015).

 

He registered for the WW II draft, address – 2901 Avondale Ave., Charlotte, North Carolina, on 16 December 1942 and described himelf as 5’9 ½”, 145 lbs, with brown hair and eyes. He had a scar on his left elbow. He completed flight instruction, was multi-engine rated and earned his commission and pilot wings. He was sent overseas to 10th Air Force, India, and assigned to the 3rd Combat Cargo Group, 11th Combat Cargo Squadron. On 4 March 1945, a C-47, # 41-18554, assigned to Air Transport Command, 11th Combat Cargo Squadron, departed the airfield at Dinjan, India, on a passenger ferry mission to Ledo, India. On attempting to land, it made a low turn and crashed. All aboard were killed. He was a passenger on board. His remains were recovered from the American military airfield cemetery at Kalaikunda, India, and buried in the Arlington National Cemetery on 9 June 1948 (Sec. 12, Grave 1742). He was awarded the Air Medal.
