HENLEY, HELEN J., Second Lieutenant, # N-789406, U.S. Army Nursing Corps

 

Helen J. Henley was born on 8 March 1919 in North Carolina to Edgar Henley (1893-1920) and Beulah Sarah (Montgomery) Spencer nee Henley (1897-1969). Siblings included Flora Lucille (Henley) Mitchell (1916-1947), Frances J. (Spencer) Virtes (1925-1994), Wanda Lee (Spencer) Campbell (1927-2010), Alda Joanne (Spencer) Gottschalk (1929-1994). She attended Greensboro College and completed nurse training at St. Leo’s Hospital, Greensboro, NC.

 

She volunteered for the Army Nursing Corps in late 1943 and trained at Drew Field, Florida, and Will Rogers Field, Oklahoma City, OK. She left for overseas in December 1944, first to Karachi, then to Ledo, India, assigned to the 172nd General Hospital, the 803rd Mobile Army Emergency. On 4 March 1945, a C-47, # 41-18554, assigned to Air Transport Command, 3rd Combat Cargo Group, 11th Combat Cargo Squadron, departed the airfield at Dinjan, India, on a passenger ferry mission to Ledo, India. On attempting to land, it made a low turn and crashed. All aboard were killed. She was a passenger on board. Her remains were recovered from the American military airfield cemetery at Kalaikunda, India, and buried in the Green Hill Cemetery, Greensboro, Guilford Co., North Carolina.

MERRILL, ANN LEE, Second Lieutenant, # N-787403, U.S. Army Nurses Corps

 

Ann L. Merrill was born on 22 January 1921 in Illinois to Charles Clifford Merrill (1892-1938) and Nell Lee (Patterson) Merrill (1893-1946). A brother was Robert Lewis Merrill (1917-1993).

 

She left for overseas (India) and was assigned to the 69th General Hospital, Advance Section # 3,  Ledo, India. On 4 March 1945, a C-47, # 41-18554, assigned to Air Transport Command, 3rd Combat Cargo Group, 11th Combat Cargo Squadron, departed the airfield at Dinjan, India, on a passenger ferry mission to Ledo, India. On attempting to land, it made a low turn and crashed. All aboard were killed. She was a passenger on board. Her remains were recovered from the American military airfield cemetery at Kalaikunda, India, and buried in the New Albany National Cemetery, New Albany, Indiana, on 24 June 1948 (Sec. D, Grave 19).

 

Her brother, Robert L. Merrill, born 15 February 1917, served in the U.S. Army from 11 November 1944 to 31 August 1945. He died on 8 June 1993.
