LLOYD, KATHRYN LOUISE, First Lieutenant, # N-759905, U.S. Army Nursing Corps

 

Kathryn L. Lloyd was born on 28 February 1921 in Huntingdon, Huntingdon Co., Pennsylvania, to Harry Richard Lloyd (1888-1979) and Pearl Alice (Watson) Lloyd (1889-1980). Siblings included Elizabeth “Betty” Jane Lloyd (1918-2009), Harry R. Lloyd Jr. (1919-1987), and John Frederick Lloyd (1923-1989). Her parents resided at 1839 Holly Street, Harrisburg, PA, in 1950.

 

She volunteered for the Nursing Corps on 20 January 1943 and was first assigned to the Harrisburg Hospital for training. Sent overseas in December 1944, she was assigned to the 69th General Hospital, detached 172nd Hospital Unit. On 4 March 1945, a C-47, # 41-18554, assigned to 3rd Combat Cargo Group, 11th Combat Cargo Squadron, departed the airfield at Dinjan, India, on a passenger ferry mission to Ledo, India. On attempting to land, it made a low turn and crashed. All aboard were killed. She was a passenger on board. Her remains were recovered from the American military airfield cemetery at Kalaikunda, India, and buried in the Rolling Green Memorial Park, Camp Hill, Cumberland Co., PA, on 27 May 1948 (Sec. G, Grave 347).

 

Her brother, John F. Lloyd, born 19 June 1923, served in the USAAF, # 0-838429, from 17 May 1943 to 23 October 1945. He died 7 February 1989 and is buried in the Christ Episcopal Church and Churchyard, Philadelphia, PA.

BLEVINS, JANE MARCUM, Second Lieutenant, # N-790252, U.S. Army Nursing Corps

 

Jane M. Blevins was born on 22 September 1922 in Tennessee to Isaac Newton Blevins (1878-1964) (KY) and Elizabeth (Trammell) Blevins (1882-1976) (TN) (married 1902 – TN). Siblings included Dorothy Blevins (1904-1996), Paulina Blevins (1910-1991), Elizabeth Frona (Blevins) Smith (1912-1984), Virginia Blevins (1913-    ), and Howard K. Blevins (1916-1956).

 

She volunteered for the Nursing Corps 8 February 1944. She was sent overseas to the 172nd General Hospital, India. Her brother, Howard K. Blevins, born 25 November 1915, served in the U.S. Army, service # 34282963, Technician 5th Grade, Parachute Infantry, during WW II, from 11 May 1942 to 12 October 1945. He was awarded the Bronza Star Medal, the Purple Heart Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and saw service in the European, North African, Sicily, and Middle East theaters of war. He was a POW of the Germans at Stalag 344 Lansdorf (formerly Stalag 8B and was liberated in June 1945. He received an Honorable Discharge. He died on 17 May 1956 and is buried in Somerset, Kentucky.
