She volunteered for the Nursing Corps in New York. She was sent overseas to India and assigned to the 172nd General Hospital. On 4 March 1945, a C-47, # 41-18554, assigned to 3rd Combat Cargo Group, 11th Combat Cargo Squadron, departed the airfield at Dinjan, India, on a passenger ferry mission to Ledo, India. On attempting to land, it made a low turn and crashed. All aboard were killed. She was a passenger on board. Her remains were recovered from the American military airfield cemetery at Kalaikunda, India, and buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Hawaii, on 10 January 1949 (Sec. B, Grave 644).

 

Her brother, Richard J. McCarthy, born 22 April 1925, served in the USAAF from 6 September 1943 to 3 March 1946. He died on 25 November 1986.

CAMPER, MARJORIE A., Second Lieutenant, # N-737137, U.S. Army Nursing Corps

 

Marjorie “Margie” A. Camper was born on 26 September 1921 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota to Lester Charles Camper (1888-1951) and Augusta “Gussie” Marie (Wadsworth) Camper (1893-1979) (married 1914, SD) (1940 Census – Divorced). A sister was Catherine Wadsworth (Camper) Hoyt (1915-1984). She graduated from Washington High School and nursing school.

Her sister, Catherine W. (Camper) Hoyt, born 6 November 1915, served in the U.S. Army, a Captain, from 2 February 1942 to 5 March 1946. On 25 April 1947, she arrived in New York aboard the U.S. Army Transport George W. Goethals from Bremerhaven, Germany (departureon 12 April 1947). She died on 30 September 1984 and is buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Hawaii (Sec. I, Grave 1511).
