On 8 May 1944 a C-47, # 19468, assigned to 14th Air Force, 14th Transport Section, 1st Troop Carrier Squadron, departed the airfield at Kunming, China, on a combat cargo mission. It crashed 33 miles West of Keking, China at about 0045 Zulu. The crew was:

Gibbs A. Monrose was born in 1917 in Louisiana to Gabriel Hampton Lewis “Gibbs” Monrose (1872-1927) and Anna Blanche (Allen) Monrose (1886-1959) (married 1 April 1916, New Orleans, LA). Living with them in 1930-1940 was a maternal aunt, Julia J. Allen (1889-    ). His mother owned a jewelry store in 1930.

 

He enlisted in the USAAF as an aviation cadet on 24 January 1942. He completed flight instruction through advanced schools and was multi-engine rated. He earned his commission and pilot wings. He was sent overseas to 14th Air Force, China. On 8 May 1944 a C-47, # 19468, assigned to 14th Air Force, 14th Transport Section, 1st Troop Carrier Squadron, departed the airfield at Kunming, China, on a combat cargo mission. He was the pilot. It crashed 33 miles West of Keking, China at about 0045 Zulu. After recovery of the indistinguishable remains of the crew from the crash site and then recovery from India, the crew was buried in a group (Edgar, Hofford, Hurst, Magruder, Mallett, Monrose, & Mount) burial ceremony at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, Lemay, Missouri, on 1 September 1949 (Sec. 82, Graves 73, 73A).
