On 7 May 1943 a C-87 (B-24 cargo transport variant), # 41-23669, assigned 10th Air Force, 1st Ferry Group, 3rd Ferry Squadron, Chabua, India, departed the airfield at Yangkai, China, on a cargo mission through the Himalayan mountain range (the Hump) to Chabua, India. The crew was:

Anthony Donabedian was born in 1918 in Armenia to Hovhaness J. (John) Donabedian (1889-    ) (naturalized 1921) and Rose Nevart (Vartanian) Donabedian (1904-    ) (naturalized 1941) (both born in Armenia). Siblings were Charlotte Louise Donabedian (1925-    ) (RI) and Virginia Beatrice (Donabedian) Samuelian (1928-1997) (RI). Living with them in 1930 was his maternal grandmother, Sharkar Vartanian (1869-    ) (Armenia – immigrated 1922) (widowed).

 

He enlisted in the USAAF in New York, New York, on 23 April 1941. After enlisting in the USAAF, he completed flight instruction through advanced schools and was assigned to fly the B-24 Liberator and assigned to the C-87 Express Liberator. He was multi-engine rated and earned his commission and pilot wings. He was sent overseas to India. On 7 May 1943 a C-87, # 41-23669, assigned 10th Air Force, 1st Ferry Group, 3rd Ferry Squadron, Chabua, India, departed the airfield at Yangkai, China, on a cargo mission through the Himalayan mountain range (the Hump) to Chabua, India. The C-87 crashed enroute and the crew killed. He is remembered on the tablets of the missing in the Manila American Cemetery & Memorial, Philippines. He was awarded the Air Medal.
