On 23 October 1943 a C-46A Commando assigned to 10th Air Force, 30th Troop Carrier Group, 304th Troop Carrier Squadron, Mohanbari, India, departed the airfield on a cargo mission through the Himalayan mountain range (the Hump) to Yunnanyi, China. The crew was:

PETERSON, ALLEN JONES, First Lieutenant, # 0-729005, USAAF

 

Allen J. Peterson was born on 20 July 1920 in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Albert Edward Peterson (1883-1958) and Barbara Harriet (Jones) Gallion nee Peterson (1885-1969). Siblings were Theron Peterson (1906-    ), Dorothy Barbara (Peterson) Love (1907-1974), Raymond Elwood Peterson (1910-1989), Margaret Peterson (1911-    ), and Kathleen (Peterson) Allman (1916-1956). He graduated from West High School.

 

He enlisted in the USAAF on 27 January 1942. After enlisting in the USAAF, he completed flight instruction through advanced schools and was assigned to fly the Curtiss C-46 Commando. He was multi-engine rated and earned his commission and pilot wings. He was sent overseas to India. On 23 October 1943 a C-46A Commando assigned to 10th Air Force, 30th Troop Carrier Group, 304th Troop Carrier Squadron, Mohanbari, India, departed the airfield on a cargo mission through the Himalayan mountain range (the Hump) to Yunnanyi, China. The C-46 crashed enroute but some crewman survived. After recovery from the American military cemetery at Barrackpore, India, his remains were buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Hawaii, on 5 January 1949 (Sec. A, Grave 64). He was awarded the Purple Heart.
