On 28 February 1945 a Curtiss C-46 Commando assigned to 10th Air Force, 1337th AAF Base Unit, departed the airfield at Sookerating, India, on a cargo mission to Liuliang, China, through the Himalayan mountain range (the Hump). Last contact by radio was with Chabua airfield at about 0830 Zulu when it was 10 minutes east of Tingkawk-Sakan, Burma. The crew was:

On 12 March 1945, Private Wesley F. McCormick was found dead in the Hukawng Valley at coordinates 26° 22’ North & 96° 29’ East by Lt. W.F. Diebold and Sgt Brenner, a para-rescue team from the 1352nd AAF Base Unit, Search & Rescue. Pvt McCormick was buried there on 13 March 1945.

He enlisted in the USAAF in Illinois. He was trained to maintain and operate the radio equipment on the C-46 Commando. He earned his crewman wings and was sent overseas to India.
