Joseph J. Barry Jr., was born in 1922 in Everett, Massachusetts, to Joseph James Barry (1894-1978) and Florence Catherine (Marchant) Barry (1897-1967). Siblings included Alice Marie (Barry) Manning (19201975) and Barbara A. Barry (1929-2008). In 1940 his father worked as an installer for a telephone company and was one of nine children in his family. His father was a veteran of WW I and served from 29 April 1918 to 21 December 1918.

 

He resided in Middlesex, Massachusetts, when he enlisted on 23 November 1942 in Boston, Massachusetts. He was sent overseas to India and assigned to the Headquarters Squadron, 311th Fighter-Bomber Group, 10th Air Force, located at Dinjan air base, India. On 12 February 1944, he was a passenger on the B-25-D, # 41-30369, assigned to 491st Bomb Squadron, 341st Bomb Group, detached to 5320th Air Defense Wing, 311th Fighter-Bomber Squadron, departed Dinjan air base, India, on combat mission to bomb and provide offensive reconnaissance. Darkness came shortly after aircraft crossed the Hump. The aircraft did not return from its mission. No search made. Ground troops notified. He is remembered on the Manila American Cemetery, Fort William McKinley, Philippines. He was awarded the Purple Heart.

HILL, WILLIE, Private, # 34641358, U.S. Army

 

Willie Hill was born in 1922 in South Carolina. He enlisted 12 January 1943 at Fort Jackson, Columbia, South Carolina. He was sent overseas after his training and was assigned to Battery B of the 484th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion at the air base at Dinjan, India. On 12 February 1944, he was a passenger on the B-25-D, # 41-30369, assigned to 491st Bomb Squadron, 341st Bomb Group, detached to 5320th Air Defense Wing, 311th Fighter-Bomber Squadron, departed Dinjan air base, India, on a combat mission to bomb and do offensive reconnaissance. Darkness came shortly after aircraft crossed the Hump. The aircraft did not return from its mission. He is remembered on the Manila American Cemetery & Memorial, Philippines. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
