BARTO, JOHN, Private First Class, # 15354011, USAAF
John Barto was born on 15 January 1923 in Ohio to Paul Barto (1888-1955) and Julia (Kristovich) Barto (1890-1979) (both born Czechoslovakia) (married 13 April 1907, Klenovec, Czechoslovakia). Siblings included Julia (Barto) Palocek (1909-1994) (Czechoslovakia), Elaine Barto (1917- ) (Mich.), Paul Barton Jr. (1921-2011) (Mich.), Andrew Barto (1923-1948) (OH), and Olga Susie (Barto) Gath nee Bloss (1930- ) (OH).
He enlisted in the USAAF in Ohio on 27 November 1942. After training, he was sent to India and assigned to the 1328th AAF base Unit, in India. On 5 June 1945, a C-47A, # 41-38746, assigned to Air Transport Command, Assam Wing, India, B Squadron, departed the airfield at Dum Dum, India, on an air resupply cargo mission, eventually to land at the airfield at Jorhat, India. It never landed. After recover from the American military cemetery in India, the remains of crew and passengers (Besone, Adoff, McLauchlin, Melichar were buried in a group burial - Burial 4570, GB-530) and ceremony in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, Lemay, Missouri, on 15 March 1950 (Sec. 79, Graves 279A, 280B, and 281C). He is remembered in the Brooklyn Heights Cemetery, Cleveland, Ohio.
His brother, Andrew Barto, born 15 January 1923 (twin), enlisted in the USAAF on 27 November 1942 (with his brother) and was honorably discharged 10 February 1946. He was a Private First Class, # 15354087, assigned to the 594th AAF Base Unit. He died 16 March 1948 and is buried in the Brooklyn Heights Cemetery, Cleveland, Ohio. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal.
