On 30 July 1945 a P-51B-15, “Cookies Nookie,” # 42-106956, assigned to 14th Air Force, 311th Fighter Group, 529th Fighter Squadron, Pungchachung, China, departed the forward echelon airfield at Sian, China, on a combat sweep. The pilot was Major Homer L. Smith, # 0-667004. The fighter was seen to crash twenty miles northeast of Tientsin, China (39° 14’ North & 117° 20’ East) as reported by 1stLt Rodger L. Rosenwald, 0-686772.

Homer L. Smith was born on 20 August 1915 in Charlton, Lucas Co., Iowa, to George K. Smith (1889-1957) and Helen Lillian (Baxter) Smith (1895-1988) (married 26 July 1913, Lincoln Lucas Co., IA). Siblings were Harold H. Smith (1920-1939), Georke K. Smith Jr. (1924-2002) and Donald Lee Smith (1926-1928). Marker gives birthdate as 20 Aug 1914 and, despite MACR, the USAAF determined date of death was 19 November 1945. He was married to Mary Ellen (Clark) Young nee Smith (1919-    ) on 1 January 1940.

 

He enlisted in the USAAF in Des Moines, Iowa, on 23 February 1942. After he enlisted in the USAAF, he completed flight instruction through advanced schools to fly the North American Aircraft P-51 Mustang. He earned his commission and pilot wings. He was sent overseas through India to China, assigned to the 14th Air Force. On 30 July 1945 a P-51B-15, “Cookies Nookie,” # 42-106956, assigned to 14th Air Force, 311th Fighter Group, 529th Fighter Squadron, Pungchachung, China, departed the forward echelon airfield at Sian, China, on a combat sweep. The fighter was seen to crash twenty-five miles northeast of Tientsin, China (39° 14’ North & 117° 20’ East) as reported by 1stLt Rodger L. Rosenwald, 0-686772. The crash was at Hsi Chi Pa, part of Hsien Tao Village, on top of Chin Hua mountain, in the middle of a rice field and the fighter burned when it crashed. No remains were recovered. He is remembered on the Tablets of the missing in the Manila American Cemetery & Memorial, Philippines, and is remembered in the Charlton Cemetery, Lucas Co., Iowa.
