Donato M. Tricarico was born in 1921 in New Jersey to Antonio Tricarico (1878- ) (Foggia, Italy – arrived 1910 ) and Antonietta (Aqiulino) Tricarico (1885- ) (Italy) (married 13 February 1915, Brooklyn, NY). Siblings included Anna or Ann Marie (Tricarico) Nieman (1916- ) and Vincenzo or Vincent Tricarico (1922- ). He was a high school graduate. His father was a tailor in 1930.
He enlisted in the USAAF in Treton, New Jersey, living in Middlesex Co., New Jersey, on 9 January 1942. He was trained in the maintenance and operation of the radio equipment on the C-46 Commando. He earned his crewman wings. On 13 March 1945, a C-46, # 42-101074, assigned to 20th Air Force, 3rd Air Transport Squadron (Mobile), departed the airfield at Sookerating, India, at 0614 hours IST on a cargo mission (88MK soft-nosed high explosive shells) to Chanyi, China. Last contact by radio was at about 0834 hours. Cpl. Paul L. Anira, 37660974, reported that 074 got take-off instructions then he heard the C-46 call at check points 47, 225 and a final call when his position (C-46 # 745) was over check point 218. Weather was broken clouds up to 18,000’ and required part time IFR. He is remembered on the wall of the missing in the Manila American Cemetery & Memorial, Philippines. He was awarded the Air Medal.
