On 26 June 1944 a P-40N-5, # 42-104936, assigned to 14th Air Force, 23rd Fighter Group, 74th Fighter Squadron, was in a mid-air collision about 10 miles North of SH-5. The pilot was 2ndLt Donald K. Overend, # 0-694260. “South of Hokiashan P-51s flying top cover descended to bomb some boats and Lt. Overend, in a P40, climbed sharply, cutting the tail off a P-51, piloted by Lt. Paul J. Tessmann. Both aircraft broke and started burning. They crashed near Hengshan, Hunan, China.

 

OVEREND, DONALD K., Second Lieutenant, # 0-694260, USAAF

 

Donald K. Overend was born on 25 August 1923 in Lockport, Niagara Co., New York, to Harry W. Overend (1890-    ) (NY) (Engineer) and Ursula E. (Taber) Overend (1899-    ) (NY) (married 25 November 1922, Niagara Co., NY). Siblings included Barbara A. Overend (1924-    ). He graduated from Lockport High School.

 

He enlisted in the USAAF in Buffalo, New York on 20 October 1942. He completed flight instruction through advanced schools and earned his commission and fighter pilot wings. He was sent overseas through India to China. On 26 June 1944 a P-40N-5, # 42-104936, assigned to 14th Air Force, 23rd Fighter Group, 74th Fighter Squadron, was in a mid-air collision about 10 miles North of SH-5. The pilot was 2ndLt Donald K. Overend, # 0-694260. South of Hokiashan P-51s flying top cover descended to bomb some boats and 2ndLt. Overend, in a P-40, climbed sharply, cutting the tail off a P-51 piloted by 1stLt. Paul J. Tessmann. Both aircraft broke and started burning. They crashed near Hengshan, Hunan, China. He is remembered on the tablets of the missing in the Manila American Cemetery & Memorial, Philippines. He was awarded the Purple Heart.

 

His father, Harry W. Overend, born 1890, Private, # 1213372, U.S. NY National Guard, 108th Infantry Regiment, served during WWI from 31 May 1917 to 12 March 1919 (served overseas from 10 May 1918 to 21 December 1918 – wounded in action 17 October 1918). He was awarded the Purple Heart.

TESSMAN, PAUL JOHN, First Lieutenant, # 0-2051770, USAAF               (MACR 16253)

 

Paul J. Tessmann was born on 16 January 1920 in Parkers Prairie, Minnesota, to Henry Ernest Tessmann (1881-1971) and Adelia A. (Schriefer) Tessmann (1885-1981). Siblings included Dorothy A. Tessmann (1908-1993), Alfred Louis Henry Tessmann (1909-1994), Henry Harold Otto Tessmann (1911-    ), Rev. Harold Herbert Tessmann (1914-1969), Ruth C. Adelia Tessmann (1916-    ), and Louis O. Tessmann (1923-1990). He was married on 11 April 1943 to Jean Lorraine Yeager (1923-1995) in DeKalb Co., Illinois. He graduared from Sycamore High School - "NOTHING GREAT IS LIGHTLY WON."
