On 15 June 1944, a P-40N-5, # 105000, assigned to 14th Air Force, 23rd Fighter Group, 74th Fighter Squadron, departed the airfield at Hengyang, China, on a bombing and strafing mission of Chuchow, China. It was shot down by intense ground fire and anti-aircraft fire. The pilot was Maj. Barry E. Melloan, # 0-398666. Last contact was by radio with 1stLt Robert M. Cage, 0-736983 and 2ndLt Donald K. Overend, 0-694260.

 

Lt. Cage, on the same mission, heard Maj. Melloan call “I’m badly hit.” He then saw a P-40 pull up into the overcast. Lt. Overend, on the same mission, saw a big puff of smoke and what looked like a parachute near a large ground hole and part of a plane. The parachute was slightly away and near a large house.

 

MELLOAN, BARRY EMIL, Major, # 0-398666, USAAF

 

Barry E. Melloan was born on 18 March 1918 in Kentucky to Carlos Melloan (1887-1926) and Alma Elizabeth “Lizzie” (Woosley) Melloan (1899-1922) (married 10 June 1917 in Indiana). On 28 January 1943 he married Ramona “Polly” Perkins in Queens, New York, New York. They had a daughter, Barrie Lyn Melloan (1944-2010).

 

After enlisting in the USAAF, he completed flight instruction and advanced flight schools. He earned his commission and pilot wings. He was sent to 14th Air Force in China. On 15 June 1944, a P-40N-5, # 105000, assigned to 14th Air Force, 23rd Fighter Group, 74th Fighter Squadron, departed the airfield at Hengyang, China, on a bombing and strafing mission of Chuchow, China.
