SMITH, GEORGE W., First Lieutenant, # 0-863257, USAAF

 

George W. Smith was born on 7 December 1915. He completed flight instruction through advances schools and earned his commission and pilot wings. Sent overseas to India, he eventually found himself assigned to Headquarters, 2nd Air Transport Squadron. On 29 September 1944, a C-46A, # 42-107329, “Ridge Runner,” assigned to 20th Air Force, 2nd Air Transport Squadron (Mobile), at Kalaikunda, India, departed the airfield at Changtu, China, for the airfield at Hsian, China. Last contact was by radio at 1545Z, SW of Shunhwa, China, after which it crashed into a mountain 40 miles north of Hsian, China, possibly due to map error(s) and poor weather. After recovery, his remains were buried in the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia (Sec. 12).

TURPIN, LUTHER MONROE, JR., Corporal, # 34764272, USAAF

 

Luther M. Turpin, Jr., was born on 26 August 1924 in Georgia to Luther M. Turpin (1888-1973) and Amanda “Mandy” (Smith) Turpin (1893-1960). Siblings included Joseph Earl Turpin (1909-2002), Delphia Leona Turpin (1916-2001), Margaret F. (Turpin) Williams (1920-    ), Amanda Louise Turpin (1922-    ), Bernard W. Turpin (1927-    ), Kathryn F. Turpin (1932-    ) and Andrew H. Turpin (1935-    ). In 1947 his parents resided at 644 Elizabeth Place NW, Atlanta, Georgia.

 

He registered for the WW II draft on 16 December 1942 and described himself as 6’, 145 lbs, with blond hair and brown eyes. He enlisted in the USAAF at Fort MacPherson, Atlanta, Georgia, on 18 March 1943. On 29 September 1944, a C-46A, # 42-107329, “Ridge Runner,” assigned to 20th Air Force, 2nd Air Transport Squadron (Mobile), at Kalaikunda, India, departed the airfield at Changtu, China, for the airfield at Hsian, China.
