WILT, DONALD E., Second Lieutenant, # 0-768783, USAAF

 

Donald E. Wilt was born 1922 in Michigan to Elmer Reinhold Wilt (1889-1967) and Creva M. (Richards) Wilt (1890-1973) (married 9 October 1911 in Essexville, Bay Co., Michigan). Sibling was Richard Mitchell Wilt (1912-1995).

 

After enlisting in the USAAF, he completed flight instruction through advanced schools, was multi-engine rated, and earned his commission and pilot wings. He was sent overseas to India, assigned to fly the C-46 Commando. On 25 September 1944 a C-46A Commando, # 42-107383, assigned to 10th Air Force, 1332nd AAF Base Unit, Mohanbari, India, departed the airfield at Chengkang, China, on a transport mission returning to Mohanbari through the Himalayan mountain range (the Hump). It crashed enroute. He is remembered on the tablets of the missing in the Manila American Cemetery & Memorial, Philippines.

 

His brother, Richard M. Wilt, born 25 November 1912, served in the U.S. Army, Technician 5th Grade, from 28 September 1943 to 3 December 1945. He died 6 November 1995 and is buried in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, Bay City, Bay Co., Michigan.

DILLON, GUY J., Corporal, # 35371225, USAAF

 

Guy J. Dillon was born 1922 in Indianapolis, Marion Co., Indiana, to Guy B. Dillon (1889-1924) (KY) and Elsie May (Conard) Dillon (1896-1985) (IN) (married 11 February 1915, IN).  Siblings included Elsie Louise (Dillon) Hild (1915-1988) and Marguerite E. (Dillon) Boner (1917-1993)s

 

After enlisting in the USAAF, he was trained to maintain and operate the radio equipment on the C-46 Commando. He earned his crewman wings. He was sent overseas to India, assigned to the C-46 Commando. On 25 September 1944 a C-46A Commando, # 42-107383, assigned to 10th Air Force, 1332nd AAF Base Unit, Mohanbari, India, departed the airfield at Chengkang, China, on a transport mission returning to Mohanbari through the Himalayan mountain range (the Hump).
