MCFATRIDGE, MATTHEW JOSEPH, JR., Private First Class, # 17133758, USAAF
Matthew J. McFatridge, Jr., was born on 1923 in Missouri to Matthew J. McFatridge (1902-1968) and Mary McFatridge (1902-1947). Siblings included Margaret McFatridge (1925-1942) and Walter Reilly McFatridge (1927-2016).
He enlisted in the USAAF and was trained to maintain and operate the radio equipment on the C-46 Commando. He earned his crewman wings and was sent overseas to India. On 8 December 1944, a C-46A Commando, # 42-107967, assigned to 10th Air Force, 1328th AAF Base Unit, Misanbari, India, departed the airfield at Kunming, China, on a cargo mission returning to Misanbari, through the Himalayan mountain range (the Hump). It was last contacted at about 1400 hrs over Funaenyi, China. On 30 December 1944 the 1328th AAF Base Unit wrote that their MIA status was changed to deceased after the C-46 wreckage was located. His brother, Walter R. McFatridge, born 9 September 1927, served in the U.S. Army, Private First Class, from 30 April 1946. He died on 1 November 2016.
