MACMILLEN, LAURENCE EARL, Flight Officer, # T-444, USAAF

 

Laurence E. MacMillen was born 19 September 1922 in Meadville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, to MacMillen and Winifred J. (Mahoney) MacMillen (1899-1986) (married 1921). The 1940 census shows his mother was divorced. In 1930, he and his sister, Arline Winifred MacMillen (1920-    ) were living with maternal grandparents, Patrick J. Mahoney (1861-1934) (parents from Ireland) and Wanda A. (Watson) Mahoney (1867-1944) (married 30 October 1889, Crawford Co., PA). His grandfather was a farmer. In 1930 his mother was renting a room from Milton and Doris Coughlin of Meadville, PA. In 1932, his mother was a tester for Moore Brothers Company and resided at 986 ½ So. Cottage, Meadville, PA. He was married on 19 March 1943 in Marion, Florida, to Frances Laura (Triola) Osborne nee MacMillen (1924-2011).

 

He enlisted in the USAAF to be a Flight Officer (enlisted # 13041020) on 8 January 1942 at Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania, earned his pilot wings, and assisted in the training of cadets and officers for multi-engine rated flight through 12 January 1944 and then was sent overseas to India. On 2 May 1944, C-47A, # 42-23520, assigned to 10th Air Force, 443rd Troop Carrier Group, 2nd Troop Carrier Squadron, departed the airfield at Dinjan, India, on a supply drop combat mission. It was last contacted by radio at 1644 hours, over Talanga Gao, at 26º 50’ North & 96º 25’ East. His remains were removed from the 10th Air Force airfield cemetery at Kakaikunda, India, and buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Hawaii, on 26 January 1949 (Sec. B, Grave 710).

MOSES, SIDNEY ARTHUR, Sergeant, # 14069623, USAAF

 

Sidney A. Moses was born 3 April 1911 in Verbena, Alabama to Sidney Arthur Moses (1874-1932) and Nel “Nellie” Elizabeth (Hirsch) Hurley nee Moses (1879-1959). Sibings included Elizabeth (Moses) Kaufman (1906-1997), Minna (Moses) (1908-2001), Louis C. Moses (1911- ), and Cora (Moses) Temerson (1913-1999).

 

He enlisted in the USAAF on 9 January 1942 in Montgomery, Alabama, while living in Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama, working for Standard Sales Co., and described himself as 5’9”, 170 lbs, with brown hair and eyes. He registered for the WW II draftSent overseas to India, he was assigned to the 64th Troop Carrier Group, 35th Troop Carrier Squadron. H served as the radio operator for transports. On 2 May 1944, C-47A, # 42-23520, assigned to 10th Air Force, 443rd Troop Carrier Group, 2nd Troop Carrier Squadron, departed the airfield at Dinjan, India, on a supply drop combat mission. It was last contacted by radio at 1644 hours, over Talanga Gao, at 26º 50’ North & 96º 25’ East.
