On 2 May 1944, C-47A, # 42-23520, assigned to 10th Air Force, 443rd Troop Carrier Group, 2nd Troop Carrier Squadron, departed the airfield at Dinjan, India, on a supply drop combat mission. It was last contacted by radio at 1644 hours, over Talanga Gao, Burma at 26º 50’ North & 96º 25’ East. The crew was:

WAXBERG, HERBERT, Second Lieutenant, # 0-747532, USAAF

 

Herbert Waxberg was born on 10 December 1917 in New York to Irving Waxberg (1883-1951) and Bertha M. (Morris) Waxberg (1891-1954) (married 18 January 1914). A sister was Helen Waxberg (1920-2007). His father owned a hardware store in 1940. In 1942 his father registered for the WW II draft and used an address of 372 Raymond St., Rockville Centre, Nassau, New York. At that time, he was a real estate broker. Herbert was recorded as a missing Jewish serviceman.

 

He enlisted in the USAAF with four years of college completed in New York City, New York, on 7 April 1942 (enlisted # 12075775). He completed extensive flight training and earned his commission and pilot wings. On 2 May 1944, C-47A, # 42-23520, assigned to 10th Air Force, 443rd Troop Carrier Group, 2nd Troop Carrier Squadron, departed the airfield at Dinjan, India, on a supply drop combat mission. It was last contacted by radio at 1644 hours, over Talanga Gao, at 26º 50’ North & 96º 25’ East. His remains were recovered from the 10th Air Force airfield at Kalaikunda, India, and buried on 10 June 1948 in Long Island National Cemetery, East Farmingdale, New York (Sec. H, Site 9078).
