John E. Ahrendtsen was born in 17 June 1921 in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois, to Charles Ahrendtsen (1889-    ) (NY) and Harriet (Becker) Ahrendtsen ( . Siblings were Marie Betty (Ahrendtsen) Rathjen (1920-    ) and Mary C. Ahrendtsen (1928-    ). His father was an accountant in 1930. His mother was a nurse in 1940 and his father an auto salesman. He graduated from Verona High School, Verona, New Jersey.

 

He enlisted in the USAAF in Newark, New Jersey, on 23 October 1942. After enlisting in the USAAF, he was trained to maintain and operate the radio equipment on the B-24 Liberator. He earned his crewman wings. He was sent overseas to India. . On 10 April 1945 a Curtiss C-46A Commando, assigned to 10th Air Force, 1337th AAF Base Unit, departed the airfield at Sookerating, India, on a cargo mission to Chanyi, China, through the Himalayan mountain range (the Hump). Last contact was by radio at about 2305 IST. He is remembered on the tablets of the missing in the Manila American Cemetery & Memorial, Philippines. He was awarded the Air Medal.
