ANDERSON, LENARD L., Technical Sergeant, # 17068444, USAAF

 

Lenard L. Anderson was the right waist gunner on 8 July 1944, when a B-29, # 42-6263, assigned to 20th Air Force, Piardoba, India, 462nd Bomb Group, 769th Bomb Squadron, departed the airfield at Piardoba, India, on a delivery flight over “the Hump” to China on a fuel tank transport sortie, had to ditch because of a severe nacelle fire in the #4 engine, causing the propeller to run away, at about 1000 Zulu about 40 miles North-Northeast of Kumitola, India. He could not swim and his remains were never found.

LYNCH, JAMES M., Staff Sergeant, # 32437306, USAAF

 

James M. Lynch was born on 30 August 1921 in New York. He enlisted at Fort Jay, Governors Island, New York. He was the left waist gunner on 8 July 1944, when a B-29, # 42-6263, assigned to 20th Air Force, Piardoba, India, 462nd Bomb Group, 769th Bomb Squadron, departed the airfield at Piardoba, India, on a delivery flight over “the Hump” to China on a fuel tank transport sortie, had to ditch because of a severe nacelle fire in the #4 engine, causing the propeller to run away, at about 1000 Zulu about 40 miles North-Northeast of Kumitola, India. He drowned and was buried near the lake. SSgt Francis Iles was buried in grave 3/B/7, Sylhet military cemetery on 12 July 1944. Date of death was 8 July. Cause of death was drowning after crash on 8 July. SSgt James Lynch also dead from drowning and is buried at Shibbarii, coordinates 25º 89” N, 96º 07” East on course 310 about 4 ½ miles from most westerly telia of Tawirpur Group. His remains were recovered from the grave in India and repatriated to be buried first in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Hawaii, then returned to the U.S. for burial in the Long Island National Cemetery, Farmingdale, NY, on 6 May 1949 (Sec. J, Grave 15395).

ILES, FRANCIS H., Staff Sergeant, # 12173840, USAAF

 

Francis H. Iles was born on 10 July 1924 in Kirkland, Oneida Co., New York to Derwin Iles (1891-1982) and Angeline “Angie” G. (Thompson) Iles (1895-1940). He had a brother, Kenneth D. Iles (1913-1998).

 

He enlisted in the USAAF at Albany, New York, on 8 December 1942. He was the tail gunner on 8 July 1944, when a B-29, # 42-6263, assigned to 20th Air Force, Piardoba, India, 462nd Bomb Group, 769th Bomb Squadron, departed the airfield at Piardoba, India, on a delivery flight over “the Hump” to China on a fuel tank transport sortie, had to ditch because of a severe nacelle fire in the #4 engine, causing the propeller to run away, at about 1000 Zulu about 40 miles North-Northeast of Kumitola, India. His brother, Kenneth D. Iles, born 19 November 1913, enlisted in the U.S. Army and served from 1 February 1944 to 31 January 1946. He died 17 June 1988 and is buried in Deansboro Cemetery, where his parents rest.
