On 25 March 1944, a P-38H-5-10 Lightning, # 42-67002, assigned to the 459th Fighter Squadron, departed the 10th Air Force air field at Chittagong, Burma, on an enemy fighter intercept mission at Shwebo, Burma. It was shot down by an enemy fighter about 25º, 20 miles from Mandalay, at about 1045 hours. It was flown by 2ndLt Anthony H. Greco, 0-748966. A witness was 1stLt Hampton E. Boggs, 0-728557.

 

1stLt Boggs reported: He last saw Greco about 40 miles west of Anisakan after making contact with the enemy and heading for Chittagong. Greco was flying as his wingman. Greco turned in a diving evasive action with a Zero following. A Zero followed Boggs and Boggs was unable to see what happened to Greco. Boggs did not see him again.

Anthony H. Greco Jr. was born on 7 December 1917 in San Jose, Santa Cara County, California, to   Anthony Greco (1885-1953) and Edna Henrietta Amelia (Cabirac) Greco (1892-1979). Siblings included Arthur Fortunate Greco (1928-    ), Alba Greco (1920-    ), Adelaide Elna (Greco) de Castello (1921-2008) and Angela Greco (1925-2012). His parents were born in Louisiana. In 1940 his father was a sales manager for a cannery. In 1920, the family lived in San Jose, California.

 

He registered for the WW II draft on 16 October 1940 while living at Rte 1, Box 25, No. Union Ave., Campbell, Santa Clara County, California. He was employed by Artichokes Limited Inc., Castroville, Monterey, California. He described himself with black hair and brown eyes. He enlisted on 27 January 1942. He completed flight training and earned his commission and pilot wings. He was sent over seas to India to the 459th Fighter Squadron, initially in India. On 25 March 1944, he flew P-38H-5-10 Lightning, # 42-67002, assigned to the 459th Fighter Squadron, departed the 10th Air Force airfield at Chittagong, Burma, on an enemy fighter intercept mission at Shwebo, Burma. He was shot down by an enemy fighter about 25º, 20 miles from Mandalay, at about 1045 hours. His remains were recovered by Graves Registration and he was buried in the airfield cemetery at Barrackpore, India. His remains were disinterred then reburied 14 March 1949 in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Hawaii (Section F, Grave 687).
