VESELY, FRANK (NMI), Staff Sergeant, # 32476251, USAAF

 

Frank Vesely was born on 14 June 1908 in Pennsylvania to Anton Vesely (1875-1952) and Antonia Vesely (1878-    ) (Bohemia - naturalized). Siblings included Tennie Vesely (1905-    ), Mary Vesely (1911-    ) and Charles Ernest Vesely (1913-1995). On 14 July 1934 he married Mary Gait (1901-1970) in Danby, Tompkins Co., New York. A son was David Allen Vesely (1934-2007). Living with them in 1940 was a brother-in-law, George S. Gait (1919-1974).

 

He enlisted in the USAAF in Syracuse, New York on 15 September 1942. He was trained as an armorer and gunner, partly responsible for maintaining the function of the weapons on the B-24 Liberator (except bombs). He earned his crewman wings and was sent overseas through India to China. On 15 January 1944 a B-24J, # 42-73252, assigned to 14th Air Force, 308th Bomb Group, 373rd Bomb Squadron, Yangki, China, departed the airfield at Kweilin, China, on a sea search mission. It crashed and all on board were killed. After recovery, his remains were buried in the Woodlawn National Cemetery, Elmira, Chemung Co., New York, on 16 March 1948 (Sec. F, Grave 4267).
