Robert Mall (Robert Malczewski) was born on 21 March 1922 in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois, to Max Malczewski and Clara (Troczyna) Malczewski. Siblings included Leroy Maximillian Mall (1914-1996), Leonard Chester Mall (1917-1999), Violet Clarisa Mall (1923-2002 ). In 1940 they were living with an uncle, William Roberts (1887- ) and Lucy Roberts (1893- ).
After enlisting, he completed several flight instruction schools, earning his commission, pilot wings and multi-engine rating. He was assigned to 10th Air Force in India. On 9 August 1944, a C-47A, # 42-933767, assigned to 10th Air Force, 3rd Combat Cargo Group, 12th Combat Cargo Squadron, departed the airfield at Moran, India, at 0630 hours on a cargo mission to Myitkyina, Burma. It was last heard from near Ledo, India, at about 0730 hours. The crashed aircraft was reached at 1345 hours, 17 November 1944, by an Air Jungle Rescue Unit ground search party, 10th Air Force. It was located at 140º from Auche, Burma, at 25º 37’ North & 97º 2 ½’ East (map coord. SC7274). Four crew and two passengers aboard at time of crash. The body of 1stLt Ralph Austin Burson, 0-1551813, 90th Fighter Squadron, 80th Fighter Group, was not found and he is categorized MIA. His remains were recovered and buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, on 15 September 1949 (Sec. 34, Grave 4221).
His brother, Leonard C. Mall, born 23 May 1917, served in the U.S. Army from 23 August 1948 to 30 June 1963 (a Major). He died on 4 December 1999 and, after cremation, was interred in the Crown Hill Cemetery & Mausoleum, Albany, Georgia.
