On 28 July 1944, a P-40, assigned to 14th Air Force, 5th Fighter Group, 27th Fighter Squadron, Chihkiang, China, departed its airfield on a bomb/strafe mission. Last contact was by radio with Maj. James A. Dale and Capt. John R. Dehaven. It was struck by enemy anti-aircraft fire. The P-40 crashed and Capt. Newell’s death was witnessed by Capt. Shing, a Chinese guerilla, who helped bury the remains and positively identified the body as that of Capt. Newell. The pilot was Capt. Miles Newell, # 0-661361.

Miles Newell was born on 9 January 1919 in Granville, Licking Co., Ohio, to Rev. John Thomas Newell (1875-1954) and Edith (Van Buskirk) Newell (1877-1963). He graduated from Dearborn High School. He graduated with a four-year degree from college. Siblings included Martha Van Buskirk Newell (1910-2005), Phillip D. Newell (1915-1993), and John Thomas Newell II (1915-1987).

 

He enlisted in the USAAF in Detroit, Michigan, on 9 November 1941. After enlisting in the USAAF, he completed flight instruction and earned his commission and pilot wings. He was sent overseas through India to China. On 28 July 1944, a P-40, assigned to 14th Air Force, 5th Fighter Group, 27th Fighter Squadron, Chihkiang, China, departed its airfield on a bomb/strafe mission. Last contact was by radio with Maj. James A. Dale and Capt. John R. Dehaven. It was struck by enemy anti-aircraft fire. The P-40 crashed and Capt. Newell’s death was witnessed by Capt. After recovery, his remains were buried in the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Philippines (Block C, Roe 16, Grave 48). A memorial is included on the marker for his parents in the Northview Cemetery, Dearborn, Wayne Co., Michigan. He was awarded the Purple Heart.

 

His brother, Phillip D. Newell, born 17 March 1912, served in the U.S. Navy, Lieutenant Commander, from 21 August 1942 to 3 June 1946. He died 23 November 1993 and is buried in the Lakeview Cemetery, Johnston City, Williamson Co., Illinois.
