On 8 December 1944 a P-51C-11, # 43-25197, assigned to 14th Air Force, 23rd Fighter Group, 75th Fighter Squadron, Chihkiang, China, departed the airfield on a dive bombing mission over Hengyung airfield. It was last seen crashing in a ball of flame into the target, with a wing separating, by Capt. Forrest F. Parham, 0-450540. The pilot was Capt. Samuel A. Dance, # 0-378953.

Samuel A. Dance was born on 6 October 1917 in Georgia to Samuel A. Dance (1875-1939) and Lenora B. Dance (1887-    ). Siblings included Walter Edward Dance (1912-1968), Margaret Sulie Dance (1919-1990) . Living with them in 1920 was a maternal aunt, Martha “Mattie” J. (Little) Rucker.

 

He enlisted in the USAAF on 31 May 1941. After enlisting, he completed flight instruction and earned his commission and pilot wings. He was sent overseas through India to China. On 8 December 1944 a P-51C-11, # 43-25197, assigned to 14th Air Force, 23rd Fighter Group, 75th Fighter Squadron, Chihkiang, China, departed the airfield on a dive-bombing mission over Hengyung airfield. It was last seen crashing in a ball of flame into the target, with a wing separating, by Capt. Forrest F. Parham, 0-450540. He is remembered on the tablets of the missing in the Manila American Cemetery & Memorial, Philippines. Memorial markers were placed in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Eatonton, Putnam Co., Georgia.
