Henry Shienmann Jr. was born on 5 July 1923 in Germany to Henry (Heinrich) Schienmann (1897-1991) (Josefowo, Poland/Russia – naturalized 1934) and Wanda (Siwera) Schienmann (1900-1965) (Lodz, Poland/Russia – naturalized 1936) (married 26 February 1924, Kieth, Germany). Siblings included Waldtraut Schienmann (1925-   ) (Germany), Albert W. Schienmann (1928-2013) (NY), Hildegarde M. (Schienmann) Brill (1929-    ) (NY), Edmund William Schienmann (1931-1997) (NY). His maternal grandmother, Ophelia Siwera (1880-    ) (Poland) was living with them in 1940. His maternal uncle, Aspolt Siwera (1905-    ) was living with them in 1940.

 

He enlisted in the USAAF in New York City, New York, on 30 September 1942. He was trained in the maintenance and repair of the mechanical parts of the B-24/C-87. He earned his crewman wings. He was sent overseas to India. On 24 September 1944, a C-87 (transport modified B-24), # 43-30614, assigned to Air Transport Command, 1327th AAF Base Unit, Tezpur, China, departed the airfield at Hsinching, China, on a cargo mission to Tezpur, India. William W. Spofford Jr. was born on 7 March 1919 in New York to William W. Spofford (1895-1975) (Chelsea, MA) and Lillian D. (Thell) Spofford (1897-1981) (NY) (married 27 November 1917, NY). His father was a draftsman in 1920.

 

He enlisted in the USAAF as an aviation cadet, with two years college, at Michell Field, Hempstead, New York, on 21 January 1942. He completed flight instruction through advanced flight schools and was multi-engine rated. He earned his commission and pilot wings. He was sent overseas to India.
