Witnesses to the crash of the B-25 were Capt. James L. Flanagan, 0-393441 and Sgt John C. Vivensio, 31007553. Sgt Vivensio reported that he saw the B-25 on a strafing run on target at 800’ when it rolled onto its back and crashed and exploded about 1 mile west of the target in Annam (Vietnam; French Indochina), near Duong Diao, French Indochina. Capt. Flanagan verified this and flew over the crash several times taking pictures. The crash coordinates were 20° 8’ North and 105° 50’ East.

Robert L. Bishop was born on 21 July 1922 in Pennsylvania to Merrill B. Bishop (1901-1972) and Zelda Pearl (Kettering) Bishop (1903-1964) (married 22 October 1921, Apollo, PA). Siblings were William Leslie Bishop (1924-2004) and Maryanna K. (Bishop) Dodge (1932-2001). He attended Miami University, Oxford, Ohio (Sigma Nu, Omicrom Delta Kappa, Delta Sigma Pi, Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities, Chess Team Captain, Nusiness Manager, Orchestra, Basketball, Track, Baseball). He married Charlotte Louise (Steele) Bishop (1918-1981), who, on his death, lived at 596 Sherman St., Conneaut, Ohio. She subsequently married his brother, William L., on 1 June 1947, in Ashtabula Co., Ohio.

 

He enlisted in the USAAF in Ohio on 31 December 1941. After enlisting in the USAAF, he completed flight instruction through advanced school and was assigned to fly the B-25 Mitchell. He earned his commission and pilot wings.
