Francis P. Bufkin Jr. was born on 12 September 1920 in Mississippi to Francis P. Bufkin (1892-1954) (MS) and Irene (Johnson) Bufkin (1895-1976) (MS). Sibling Carolyn S. (Bufkin) Pitts (1917-2005) (MS). In 1940 he resided in Hazlehurst, MS, with his mother and his sister’s daughter, his niece, Mona Ghetti (1934- ).
He enlisted in the USAAF in Nashville, Tennessee, on 2 February 1943. He was trained to maintain and operate the radio equipment on the C-46 Commando. He earned his crewman wings. He was sent overseas through India to China. On 7 April 1945 a Curtiss C-46A-55CK Commando, # 43-47211, assigned 10th Air Force, ATC, 2nd Troop Carrier Squadron, Luliang, China, departed the airfield at Hanchung, China, on a cargo mission to Peishiyi, China. It crashed enroute. He is remembered on the tablets of the missing in the Manila American Cemetery & Memorial, Philippines. A memorial was placed in the Hazlehurst Cemetery, Hazlehurst, Copiah Co., Mississippi. He was awarded the Air Medal.
