He enlisted in the USAAF on 19 February 1944. After enlisting in the USAAF, he completed flight instruction through advanced school, was multi-engine rated, and were assigned to fly the Douglas C-47 Skytrain. He earned his commission and pilot wings. He was sent overseas through India to China. On 5 May 1945 a C-47B, # 43-48869, assigned to 14th Air Force, 1340th AAF Base Unit, Kunming, China, departed the airfield at Chihkiang, China, on a cargo mission to Kunming, China. The C-47 crashed and the crew was killed. After recovery from China, his remains were buried in the Mount Lebanon Cemetery, Mount Lebanon, Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania.

Louis J. Merenda Jr. was born on 24 April 1925 in Conshohocken, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania, to Louis J. Merenda (1890-    ) and Mary Catherine (Cardamone) Merenda (1889-    ). Sibling was Mary Grace (Merenda) Deluccia (1928-2001).

 

He enlisted in the USAAF on 3 May 1943 at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland. Hwas trained to maintain and operate the radio equipment on the C-47 Skytrain. He earned his crewman wings. He was sent overseas through India to China. On 5 May 1945 a C-47B, # 43-48869, assigned to 14th Air Force, 1340th AAF Base Unit, Kunming, China, departed the airfield at Chihkiang, China, on a cargo mission to Kunming, China. The C-47 crashed and the crew was killed. After recovery from China, his remains were returned to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 24 October 1947.
