DEPALMA, UMBERTO, First Lieutenant, # 0-831137, USAAF

 

Umberto DePalma was born on 20 January 1924 in Michigan to Pietro “Peter” DePalma (1882-1954) (Italy) and Rosa (Savone) DePalma (1888-1963) (Italy – naturalized #250319, 10 Feb. 1955). Siblings were Rocco DePalma (1909-    ), Joseph DePalma (1912-1987), and Susan (DePalma) DeLuca (1921-    ).

 

After enlisting, he completed flight instruction through advanced school and was assigned to fly the B-25 Mitchell. He was multi-engine rated and earned his commission and pilot wings. He was sent overseas to India. On 10 April 1945 a B-25J, # 44-28849, assigned to 10th Air Force, 341st Bomb Group, 490th Bomb Squadron, Warazup, Burma, departed the airfield on a flight to Shingbwiyang, Burma, then to Ledo, India. It was last seen at about 1238 IST at Shingbwiyang. A search for the B-25 was flown by Lt.Col. Robert A. Erdin on 11 April 1945 from 0930 to 1100 and he searched the same flight course again from 1400 to 1530 hours IST. Nothing sighted. Air Jungle Rescue was notified 11 April 1945. He is remembered on the tablets of the missing in the Manila American Cemetery & Memorial, Philippines. He is remembered in the Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly, Oakland Co., Michigan. He was awarded the Air Medal.

After enlisting, he was trained to maintain and monitor the mechanical systems (crew chief) on the B-25 Mitchell. He earned his crewman wings. He was sent overseas to India.
