On 16 September 1944, a Consolidated Aircraft C-87 Liberator Express (transport variant of B-24 Liberator), # 44-39246, assigned to 10th Air Force, Air Transport Command, 1327th AAF Base Unit, Tezpur, India, departed the airfield at Hsinching, China, on a cargo mission to Sookerating, India. The C-87 was a Consolidated Aircraft modified-for-transport B-24 Liberator, known as the Liberator Express. Last contact was by radio about 20 minutes out of Shingbwiyang, Burma. The crew were:

Charles M. Glass was born on 27 February 1915 in Des Moines, Polk Co., Iowa, to Clarence Marshall Glass (1872-1947) (IA) and Lena (Butler) Glass (1879-1963) (IL). Siblings included Paul Butler Glass (1903-1979), Robert Cowan Glass (1905-1990), Leland Childs Glass (1907-1930), Kenneth Floyd Glass (1910-1977), Frances Maurine (Glass) Melcher (1911-1999), Thomas Marshall Glass (1913-1997). He married Josephine G. Stevens (1914-    ) on 24 June 1938 in Des Moines, Iowa. They divorced in late 1940 in Des Moines, Iowa. They had a son.

 

He enlisted in the USAAF at Fort Des Moines, Iowa, on 29  May 1941 as an aviation cadet. He completed flight instruction through advanced schools and was multi-engine rated. He earned his commission and pilot wings. He was sent overseas to India. On 16 September 1944, a C-87, # 44-39246, assigned to 10th Air Force, Air Transport Command, 1327th AAF Base Unit, Tezpur, India, departed the airfield at Hsinching, China, on a cargo mission to Sookerating, India. The C-87 was a Consolidated Aircraft modified-for-transport B-24 Liberator, known as the Liberator Express. Last contact was by radio about 20 minutes out of Shingbwiyang, Burma. The wreckage and crew has not been found and the crew were declared deceased by Public Law. He is remembered on the memorial wall of the missing in the Manila American Cemetery & Memorial, Philippines.
