BECKETT, RICHARD J., First Lieutenant, # 0-662235, USAAF

 

Richard J. Beckett was born 1921 in Iowa to Murl Clarence Beckett (1887-1938) (Old English, Iowa) and Helen Anna (Enderle) Beckett (1886-1965) (Fort Madison, Iowa) (married 2 July 1914, Fort Madison, IA). Sibling was Maureen Catherine (Beckett) Mahan (1916-1998). He attended Central High School, Tulsa, Oklahoma. He enlisted in the USAAF in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on 12 January 1942. After enlisting, he completed flight instruction through advanced school and was assigned to fly the C-87 Express Liberator. He was multi-engine rated and earned his commission and pilot wings. He was sent overseas to India. On 5 May 1945 a C-87 Express Liberator (B-24 variant for cargo transport), # 44-39265, assigned to 10th Air Force, ATC, India-China Wing, 1330th AAF Base Unit, Jorhat, India, departed the airfield on a cargo mission through the Himalayan mountain range (the Hump) to Kunming, China. Last contact was by radio at about 0036 Zulu with Capt. William Mitchell, 0-575647 near Gologhat, India. He is remembered on the tablets of the missing in the Manila American Cemetery & Memorial, Philippines. He was awarded the Air Medal.

WEAVER, WILLIE CLYDE, JR., Private First Class, # 34845384, USAAF

 

Willie C. Weaver Jr. was born on 29 June 1925 in South Carolina to Willie C. Weaver (1892-1972) (NC) and Hester Marie (Cline) Weaver (1894-1963) (NC) (married 18 February 1912, Burke, NC). Sibling was Nora K. Weaver (1923-    ).

 

He enlisted in the USAAF at Fort Jackson, Columbia, South Carolina, on 5 October 1943. He was trained to maintain and operate the radio equipment on the B-24/C-87 Express Liberator. He earned his crewman wings. He was sent overseas to India. On 5 May 1945 a C-87 Express Liberator (B-24 variant for cargo transport), # 44-39265, assigned to 10th Air Force, ATC, India-China Wing, 1330th AAF Base Unit, Jorhat, India, departed the airfield on a cargo mission through the Himalayan mountain range (the Hump) to Kunming, China.
