On 29 July 1945 a B-24L, # 44-44445, assigned to 14th Air Force, 308th Bomb Group, 375th Bomb Squadron, Hsinching, China, departed the airfield on a gas haul mission to Rupsi, India, through the Himalayan mountain range (the Hump). The crew was:

SCHMIERER, JOHN WALTER, First Lieutenant, # 0-828246, USAAF

 

John W. Schmierer was born on 30 June 1922 in Burlington Co., New Jersey, to Edwin William Schmierer (1893-1939) (NJ) and Eleanor Harper (Berry) Schmierer (1894-1965) (PA) (married 30 June 1920, Philadelphia, PA). Sibling Edwin W. Schmierer Jr. (1921-1964), Jean Harper Schmierer (1925-1925), Charles Schmierer (1928-1928), and Dorothea (Schmierer) Stockton (1931-    ).

 

He enlisted in the USAAF in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 24 February 1943. After enlisting, he completed flight instruction through advanced schools and was assigned to fly the B-24 Liberator. He was multi-engine rated and earned his commission and pilot wings. He was sent overseas to India. On 29 July 1945 a B-24L, # 44-44445, assigned to 14th Air Force, 308th Bomb Group, 375th Bomb Squadron, Hsinching, China, departed the airfield on a gas haul mission to Rupsi, India, through the Himalayan mountain range (the Hump). There was no radio contact with the B-24 after departure. The B-24 Liberator, unlike its variant, the C-87 Express Liberator, carried a load of fuel for transportation to China; a very dangerous cargo. The aircraft crashed enroute and the crew was killed. After recovery, the remains of the crew (indistinguishable) Burrell, Greer, Schmierer. And Schotter, were buried in a group ceremony in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, Lemay, Missouri, on 1 September 1949 (Sec. 82, Grave 76).

 

His father, born 18 November 1893, served in the U.S. Army during WWI from 15 December 1917 to 27 November 1918; Private, in the Central Officers Training School, Co. E. He died 26 March 1939 and is buried in the IOOF Cemetery, Beverly, Burlington Co., New Jersey.

 

His brother Edwin W. Schmierer Jr., born 19 May 1921, served in the USAAF, First Lieutenant, during WWII. He died 26 July 1964 and is buried in the Beverly National Cemetery, Beverly, Burlington Co., New Jersey.
