BOGER, JOHN DANIEL, Captain, # 0-415487, USAAF

 

John D. Boger was born on 5 April 1920 in Cabarrus Co., North Carolina, to Charles Edgar Boger (1873-1953) and Elise Melchor (Barnhardt) Boger (1890-1960). Siblings included Sarah Estelle Boger (1914-2005), Charles E. Boger (1916-1974), Elise Martin Boger (1921-2011), and James Phillip Boger (1923-1983). He graduated from Concord High School and completed three years of college.

 

After enlisting in the USAAF, he completed aviation training through advanced flights schools and was multi-engine rated. He piloted the B-24 Liberator (C-109). He earned his commission and pilot wings. He was part of the Honor Guard for President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was sent overseas to India in December 1944. On 5 January 1945, a C-109, # 44-49235, assigned to Air Transport Command, CIB, 1345th AAF Base Unit, Tezgaon, India, departed the airfield at Kurmitola, India, on a flight to Chengkung, China. Last radio contact was with Chabua, India. It was last over Imphal, India, at 2254Z. It crashed and the crew are missing in action. He is remembered on the memorial wall of the missing in the Manila American Cemetery & Memorial, Philippines. A memorial marker was placed in the Oakwood Cemetery, Concord, North Carolina. He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.

Gordon B. Gardner was born on 18 June 1922 in Utah to Ellis Fremont Gardner (1893-1936) and Nina Lysle (Burson) Gardner (1900-1980) (married 21 August 1917, Provo, UT). A brother was Ellis F. Gardner (1920-2010)

 

He enlisted in the USAAF in Salt Lake City, Utah, on 30 December1941. He was trained in the maintenance and operation of the radio equipment and earned his crewman wings. He was sent overseas to India. On 5 January 1945, a C-109, # 44-49235, assigned to Air Transport Command, CIB, 1345th AAF Base Unit, Tezgaon, India, departed the airfield at Kurmitola, India, on a flight to Chengkung, China.
