The B-24 crashed in the vicinity of Lengteng, Assam, India, coordinates 26º 27’ North & 93º 03’ East. A Graves Registration ground party reached the wreckage on 2 August 1945 and recovered five remains. They did not find the remains of the sixth crewman after an extensive search. Burial was at the American military cemetery, Jorhat, Assam, India, on 4 August 1945.

John E. Kapsner was born on 25 September 1918 in South Dakota to Edward Joseph Kapsner (1890-1945) (Minn.) and Alice C. (Phelan) Kapsner (1894-1975) (IA) (married 26 September 1917, Lyon, Iowa). Siblings included Charles Francis Kapsner (1921-    ) (ND) and Margaret Mary (Kapsner) Riha (1925-1996) (ND). He was married to Lavina (Kupper) Kapsner (1917-1994) (ND).

 

After enlisting in the USAAF, he completed flight instruction through advanced schools to fly the B-24 Liberator and was multi-engine rated. He earned his commission and pilot wings. He was sent overseas to India.
