Edward and his family lived in Rhode Island. When he crashed, he was assigned to the 492nd Bombardment Squadron, 7th Bombardment Group, 10th Air Force. He was awarded the Air Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations. His father was Joseph H. Bodell (Sr.) (1891-1976), his mother Mary A. Bodell (1890-1957), a brother, Private First Class Joseph H. Bodell Jr., Service # 31112294, was killed during the American invasion of Leyte on January 17th, 1943. A sister, Mary Catherine Bodell (1915-1980), married Vincent R. Donahue (1916-2001). The 1920 census for Pawtucket, R.I, shows his father, Joseph H Bodell, 28, worked as a steam fitter; his mother, Mary A 27, sister Mary C, 3, Joseph H Jr, 2, born 15 September 1918, and Edward, 2 months. James was born in 1923, three years after Edward, and another sister, Theresa, was born in 1927, seven years after Edward. Joseph enlisted in the U.S. Army on 31 March 1942, in Rhode Island.
