After enlisting in the USAAF, he was trained to maintain and monitor the mechanical systems (crew chief) of the Curtiss C-46 Commando. He earned his crewman wings. He was sent overseas to India. On 20 December 1943 a C-46A Commando, # 41-12406, assigned to 10th Air Force, Mohanbari, India, departed on a cargo mission through the Himalayan mountain range (the Hump) to Chengkeng, China. The C-46 crashed and has not been found. He is remembered on the tablets of the missing in the Manila American Cemetery & Memorial, Philippines.
His father, born 16 December 1893, served in the U.S. Army, Private, 20th Engineers, 40th Co. from 13 August 1917 to 16 June 1919. He died on 3 June 1962 and is buried in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, Kennett, Missouri.
