William B. Malick was born on 25 November 1921 in Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie Co., Iowa, to Harold Malick (1900-1989) and Patronella (Wolfrom) Malick (1904-1996). Siblings included Mary Jane (Malick) Delehant (1923-2004), Robert Francis Malick (1927-2014), James Wolfrom Malick (1934-2009), and Kenneth Charles Malick (1943-2007).


He enlisted in the USAAF at Fort Francis E. Warren, Cheyenne, Wyoming, on 1 August 1941. He was trained to maintain and operate the radio equipment on the C-47 Skytrain. He was sent overseas to India on about 29 April 1942. On 2 August 1943 a C-47 Skytrain, # 41-38656, assigned to 10th Air Force, 1st Ferrying Group, 6th Ferrying Squadron, departed the airfield at Mohanhari, India, on a cargo mission to Kunming, China. The crew was killed when the C-47 crashed flying across the Himalayas (the Hump). After recovery from the American airfield cemetery at Barrackpore, India, his remains were buried with those of Cpl. Malick on 26 October 1949 in the Camp Butler National Cemetery (Sec. 3, Grave 304-H), Springfield, Illinois.
