MCLAUCHLIN, MURDOCH MCRAE, Staff Sergeant, # 34319567, USAAF


Murdoch M. McLauchlin was born on 27 March 1919 in North Carolina to Neil McLauchlin (1877-1940) (SC) and Alma Leslie (Green) McLauchlin (1885-1976) (NC) (married 18 December 1905, NC). Siblings included Cornelia Isabella McLauchlin (1906-2001), Helen Argyle (McLauchlin) Mitchell (1911-2004), Elizabeth Louise McLauchlin (1915-    ), and Catherine McLean (McLauchlin) McFadden (1916-2004).


He enlisted in the USAAF at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, on 1 September 1942. He was trained to maintain and repair the mechanical parts of the C-47 Skytrain (engineer). He earned his crewman wings. He was sent overseas to India. On 5 June 1945, a C-47A, # 41-38746, assigned to Air Transport Command, Assam Wing, India, B Squadron, departed the airfield at Dum Dum, India, on an air resupply cargo mission, eventually to land at the airfield at Jorhat, India. It never landed. After recover from the American military cemetery in India, the remains of crew and passengers (Besone, Adoff, McLauchlin, Melichar were buried in a group burial - Burial 4570, GB-530) and ceremony in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, Lemay, Missouri, on 15 March 1950 (Sec. 79, Graves 279A, 280B, and 281C). A memorial marker was placed in the Summerville Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Lillington, Harnett Co., North Carolina.



Lloyd F. Melichar was born on 13 March 1910 in Fairfax, Linn Co., Iowa, to Frank William Melichar (1885-1969) (IL) and Harriet “Hattie” Olive (Cromell) Melichar (1889-1973) (NE) (married 3 June 1908 in Linn Co., Iowa). Siblings included Glenn Hollis Melichar (1912-1971), Eva Ruth (Melichar) Tafoya (1914-2000), and Olive Irene (Melichar) Brown (1917-2008). He attended Chaffey College, Ontario, California.


After enlisting in the USAAF, he was trained and then sent to India. He earned his commission.
