HICKERSON, EDWARD RICO, JR., First Lieutenant, # 0-804163, USAAF


Edward R. Hickerson Jr. was born on 15 March 1922 in California to Edward R. Hickerson (1899-1937) and Winifred Beatrice (Husted) Torres nee Hickerson (1899-1983) (both born in Mexico). Siblings included Pearl Theresa (Hickerson) Reyes (1924-2009), Estella Evangeline (Hickerson) Temby (1925-2007), Frank August Hickerson (1929-    ). Living with them in Los Angeles, CA, in 1930 was his maternal grandmother, Guillerma (Bolivar) Husted (1883-1956) (widowed). He attended the University of Southern California.


He enlisted in the USAAF in California. After enlisting in the USAAF, he completed flight instruction through advanced schools to fly the C-109 (B-24 Liberator transport conversion) and was multi-engine rated. He earned his commission and pilot wings. He was sent overseas to India. On 29 May 1945, a C-109, # 42-52023, assigned to 10th Air Force, Air Transport Command, 1330th AAF Base Unit, Jorhat, India, departed the airfield at Jorhat, India, on a ferry mission to Shamshernager, India. Last contact was by radio with Capt. William Mitchell, 0-575647, at 2156 hours IST at Jorhat, India. After recovery by Graves Registration from the American military cemetery (airfield) at Kalaikunda, India, his remains were buried in the Calvary Cemetery, 4201 Whittier Blvd., Los Angeles, California.
