Herbert H. Gumble was born on 26 November 1921 in Albion, Dane Co., Wisconsin, to Edwin C. Gumble (1891-1983) (PA) and Emily Marie (Reuterskiold) Gumble (1890-1978) (Wisc.). Siblings included Kathleen Jane (Gumble) Fleming (1918-2001), Edwin Harry Gumble (1920-2015), Bernice Emily (Gumble) Singer (1924-2005).
He completed flight instruction through advanced schools and was assigned to fly the C-47 Skytrain and was multi-engine rated. He earned his commission and pilot wings. He was sent overseas to India. On 27 June 1945, a C-47A, # 43-15699, assigned to 10th Air Force, 2nd Air Commando Group, 317th Troop Carrier Squadron, Ledo, India, departed the airfield at Lashio, Burma, on an operational flight in the combat area to Myitkyina North, Burma. Its last known location at 1250 hours was about 23º 35’ North & 97º 25’ East. The last to see the C-47A was Capt. Charles L. Sacks, 0-1695837. The last radio contact was with LCpl Willard Collins, 3673926. The last radio message from the C-47A was: “On course at 23º 35’ N, 97º 25’ E.” After recovery by Graves Registration from Burma and burial in the Manila American Cemetery & Memorial, Philippines, the remains of the crew were buried in a group ceremony (Gumble, Moore, Jaskiewicz, Bittlingmeyer, Burns & DeMing) and caskets in the Zachary Taylor National Cemetery, Louisville, Kentucky, on 23 August 1951 (Sec. F, Graves 345A-C).

His brother, Edwin H. Gumble, born 2 January 1920, served in the USAAF from 2 February 1942 (enlisted # 16049020), an officer, # 0-665788, to separation 17 November 1945 (overseas 14 February 1943 to 6 April 1944). He died 1 August 2015 in Cape Coral, Florida. He was married to Helen Jean (Lowe) (1919-2009) on 9 October 1942 in McAllen, Hidalgo Co., Texas, and they had two daughters.
