His maternal grandfather, James Samuel Smythe, was in the Civil War, enlisted 2 October 1861, as a wagoner, Ohio 76th Infantry Regiment, Company D.

George K. O’Neil was born in 1918 in Montana to Dennis Joseph O’Neil (1881-1962) (IA) and Alice Frances (Dunphy) O’Neil (1880-1960) (married 2 May 1906, Humboldt, Iowa). Siblings were Maureen A. (O’Neil) Farley (1916-1988), John W. O’Neil (1921- ), Catherine Anne (O’Neil) Martin (1921-2004). There is a George Keith O’Neil born 26 December 1917, died 7 August 1994 (burial Texas, non-VA) but don’t know if it is him.
He was a passenger, from 14th Air Force. He reported that night fighter attacks caused fir on the B-24J as a result of machingun fire. The crew was forced to bail out. He knew that Reade, Roney, Mast and Hicks bailed out from the front compartment and flight deck. Two were fired on while in parachutes and another was fired on when in the water. He did not see any of the crew again. No bodies were located. He was captured by Japanese Military Policeman Sergeant Masayoshi Kakimoto – according to Team # 9 on Formosa (Taiwan). Capt. O’Neil was evacuated to the United States.
His brother, John W. O’Neil, born in 1921, served during WWII as well but details were not found.
