After the deaths of Edward in Burma and another brother, his sole surviving brother, Lt. James Bodell, was reassigned to the United States for the duration of the wars as the sole surviving son. The Bodell family has given the ultimate sacrifice. James was assigned to the 315th Troop Carrier Group, 9th Air Force, and had flown a transport carrying parachutists behind the German lines before and after the D-Day invasion, 6 June, 1944, and was one of those who saw the thousands of ships crossing the English channel. He also ferried gliders into Normandy and Holland.
